MLK 2013: Clean-up of Veteran Housing and Neighborhood (Referral)

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., the City of Phoenix along with Arizona OIC are leading a neighborhood clean-up project in South Phoenix. Volunteers will be engaged in general trash pick-up and maintanence of nearby parks and neighborhoods. Specifically, we will be working on the front and back yards of homes in Sullivan's Place.

Sullivan’s Place is named after the founder of the Opportunities Industrialization Centers (OIC), Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan. There are 46.2 million people living in poverty in the United States resulting in the chronic homelessness of an estimated 1.6 million. Veterans comprise a disproportionate 40% of the homeless male population. The mission of the Arizona OIC through Sullivan’s Place is to assist veterans and their families in attaining self-sufficiency through the provision of dignified housing and supportive services. Sullivan’s Place seeks to serve chronically homeless veterans by providing them with stable housing. To accommodate the diverse veteran population in the Phoenix area, two houses are designed for five single males, one house for five single females, and one house for a married family with children. Occupants of Sullivan’s Place will also benefit from access to mentoring programs, skills training, and job placement services through OIC to help them better attain sustainable self-sufficiency.

Volunteers working on this project will prepare the homes for occupancy, making a huge impact. You can expect to work outside and may get minimally dirty from work in the yard.
