Citrus Picking Volunteers (Referral)

Citrus Picking

Citrus is ripening all around us. In order to collect it, though, United Food Bank requires that UFB-trained gleaners pick the fruit. We are looking for volunteers willing to make a weekly, bi-weekly, or other 5-10 shift commitment to picking fruit between now and mid to late March.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

Volunteers will be trained at United Food Bank during one of several trainings. Then, on a weekly basis, each team will be given one or two properties at which to pick fruit. All equipment will be on site ahead of time. The team will work to pick fruit in accordance with United Food Bank requirements. At the end of the pick, volunteers will collect equipment, finalize the fruit bins, and generally restore the property to the condition in which it was found.

NOTES ABOUT THIS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:

This is an outdoor environment. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

Properties are located in Gilbert, Mesa, Chandler and Tempe. Volunteers may be assigned to properties throughout this area. Please sign up only if you have the flexibility to work in this area.

Each property is screened in advance for safety and suitability. However, circumstances may change between screening and picking. Volunteers should not pick under any conditions they deem to be unsafe.

Volunteers should bring water and sun-protection such as hats, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Please wear CLOSED TOED shoes (no flip-flops, sandals, or peep-toes are permitted; sneakers are ideal). Clothing should be family-friendly.

Volunteers will be standing, bending, lifting, reaching and carrying. Homeowners are advised that there is no expectation of volunteers to climb ladders or trees to pick all the fruit from the tops of the trees. Pick only what you are comfortable reaching from the ground, and that meets the criteria for picking.

All volunteers will need to sign in and out at the start and end of their shifts. First-time volunteers will need to sign in and complete a Volunteer Application, Liability Waiver and Volunteer Agreement at training.

Training is REQUIRED. A few representatives of a picking group are welcome to attend training with the understanding that every volunteer under their supervision will be trained in the same information prior to picking.

Volunteers 12-15 must bring their own adult. Volunteers 16 and 17 may volunteer independently, but must have a parent or legal guardian sign their liability waiver. 18 or older are eligible for this volunteer opportunity. Students in high school or younger may not volunteer during regular school hours unless part of an organized school group (see UnitedFoodBank.org for group volunteer application).
