9/11: Veteran Home Painting with City of Mesa

Join us as we give back to Navy Veteran Carey Slade by painting the exterior of her home. Please wear comfortable clothes that can get paint on them and close-toed shoes. Our military personnel sacrifice so much for us and this is one of the many ways we can show our appreciation. All painting materials will be provided. Please read below for more information about Carey's time in the Navy.

The minimum age for this project is 16. Volunteer's ages 16 & 17 who wish to participate without a parent/guardian must bring a signed Youth Waiver Form with them to the project.

By signing up for volunteer opportunities and not attending, you may be depriving someone else the chance to participate and the volunteer opportunity of much-needed support.

Carey Slade is a disabled US Navy veteran and 4th generation Mesa resident.  Carey enlisted in the US Navy in 1985, and reported to NAF Atusgi Japan working in the Public Works Department as a Builder.  In 1988, she departed NAF Atsugi Japan with orders to report to Point Loma Submarine Base Public Works in San Diego, CA as a Petty Officer 2nd Class E-5. There, Carey also served in the auxiliary security force on base, and had decided to make the military her career. After signing re-enlistment papers, Carey was medically discharged due to breathing problems that had developed after being stationed in NAF Atsugi Japan caused by an open-burn pit that was in operation during her service there. Over the years, Carey's health has declined due to all of the toxic chemicals that she breathed for the three years in Japan. However, Carey says that if she had to do it all again, she wouldn't change a thing. She feels blessed to have been able to travel and proud to have protected our nation.
