About Our Volunteers

Our volunteers come from all walks of life. They are students, retirees, families, corporate teams, church groups, service clubs, etc. All volunteers receive a one-time New Volunteer Orientation to HandsOn Greater Phoenix. New Volunteer Orientations take place around the Valley or volunteers may complete an online orientation.

At orientation, volunteers learn the history of HandsOn Greater Phoenix, how our programs work and why their involvement is critical to the betterment of your organization and community. They also receive our volunteer code of ethics and tips for working with children in under-resourced areas. Additionally, all volunteers sign a waiver of liability before participating in any of our programs.

PLEASE NOTE: Our volunteers, with the exception of those serving in committed opportunities, are not fingerprinted or background checked.
Volunteer registration for HandsOn Greater Phoenix projects is taken care of right online! Volunteers simply browse for a project they are interested in based on date, geographic region, issue area or type of project. Then they log in and sign up - it's that easy!

Once a volunteer has registered, a confirmation email containing the project address, driving directions, parking instructions and other logistical details is generated and automatically sent to them. These details are only distributed to volunteers who register. This helps us make sure that we don't have too many volunteers at our projects and your organization is not overwhelmed by unwelcome guests. Volunteers also receive a reminder email a few days prior to the project and a follow-up email with an evaluation once the project has been completed.

About Our Calendar Projects
Each month, we offer a variety of volunteer opportunities in partnership with our CSPs. We work closely with you to develop ongoing projects that meet your needs, the interest of our volunteers and HandsOn Greater Phoenix project parameters. Projects occur weekly, every other week, or monthly, with the majority taking place after 5:00 pm or on weekends. Typical calendar projects involve direct service or "hands-on" work and take place within a 1-4 hour time period.

For each Calendar Project, HandsOn Greater Phoenix will recruit and train a Project Leader who attend each occurrence. Project Leaders are typically volunteers from the community who agree to act as the liaison between HandsOn Greater Phoenix, your agency and the volunteers. They monitor volunteer sign-ups and ensure that each project is completed with a thumbs up from both our CSPs and volunteers. Calendar project volunteers do not require training and only commit to one occurrence at a time.

About Our Referral Projects
Community Service Partners also have the opportunity to post agency-managed projects on the HandsOn website; these are called Referral Projects. Agency staff are given access to the HandsOn administrative website to create a project posting. This posting is submitted to HandsOn staff for approval, and posted on the public site shortly thereafter. Agencies then receive emails from individuals interested in participating and are responsible for contacting and coordinating these volunteers.

One-time referral opportunities are posted on the calendar alongside Calendar Projects. Calendar Projects are listed in bold print, while one-time Referral Projects are listed in normal print. Referral Projects that are not date-specific or those requiring a long-term commitment are listed in our Volunteer Bulletin Board Page.

About Our BIG Days of Service
We have several large-scale service events throughout the year. We put out a Request for Propsal (RFP) Packet to find out which CSPs are interested in participating and to get a general idea about which types of projects need volunteers. Once projects are selected from the pool of RFPs, we work with each CSP to develop a project that meets a need and fulfills volunteer interest. This involves a site visit and consultation to determine logistics. We will then recruit volunteer teams and trained project leaders to ensure a successfully completed project. We are committed to success and provides evaluation and follow-up for each project we take on.

About Our Business Services Program
We have developed our Business Services program to help companies in the Valley create meaningful community service opportunities for their employees. Projects are determined by company interests and community needs. This is a great way to educate the business community on your needs and missions.
